The Fantasy Art of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Horse Armor

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a first-person perspective fantasy computer role-playing game set in a vast 3D world with an open-ended storyline that allows the player the freedom to pursue the main quest, side quests, or simply explore the world. The game is set in a different geographic location from the previous in the series (Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind) and in general the architecture and wildlife is more medieval and real-world. The fantasy game art is vastly improved, however, and at the time of its release wowed the world with its realism and attention to physics in its interactivity.

This Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion fantasy game art page has pictures of armored horses. Realistic-looking horses were always a part of Oblivion, but it was not until the downloadable add-on "Horse Armor" that horses received armor and improved survivability. The game engine does not permit fighting on horseback, so a character typically had to either flee combat or dismount to fight. While dismounting, the horse was frequently attacked, and in the mid to late game, when enemeies are strong, a horse could easily be killed.

There are only two styles of armor -- Steel and Elven. If you take a look at how they are implemented in the game, they are not actually worn by the horse. Instead, the game replaces a horse with another horse modelled wearing armor.

At the end of the slideshow are pictures of an unarmored horse in Oblivion.
