There are two ways to finally kill vampire lord Nicolai, who rises again and reappears underground with a full arm so long as the land is in eternal night.

One way is to trade four dwarven artifacts for five phoenixes. With the phoenixes in the army, Nicolai cannot rise again after being defeated in battle.

The other way (or if Findan loses all his phoenixes) is to slay all the shadow dragons responsible for maintaining the eternal night (large stacks of 70+ scattered throughout the map). There is a partial lightening of the sky when some are killed, and bright day arrives when the final stack is destroyed.
