The Infinity Engine was first developed for the fantasy computer role-playing game Baldur's Gate, one of the first faithful real-time computer adaptations of the table top pen-and-paper fantasy roleplaying game Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Over time, the engine was modified and adapted to content expansion and game rule changes, and for expansions and new games. As a result, the games have a generally similar look, and for the most part the in-game models for characters can generally be considered identical.
The notable exception to this was Planescape: Torment: It used larger models, and unique models for the protagonist and key plot characters and companions. Character development and allowed equipment was severely restricted, resulting in strongly identifiable characters with their own look, traits, and schtick.

Years after development on the Infinity Engine stopped in favour of a true 3D environment (beginning with Neverwinter Nights) the games and the Infinity Engine continued to be popular, and fan-created utilities and resources made playing these games even more enjoyable today.
Particularly outstanding is a mod with the unlikely name "Easytutu" that lets you play the original Baldur's Gate in the enhanced Baldur's Gate II engine.
